I Got Thousands of Clicks But My Phones Don’t Ring
Useful information and expert analysis about I Got Thousands of Clicks But My Phones Don’t Ring.
We have come to the end of our series "First Step to Google Ads." In this long journey:
We ensured that our site is not a "leaky bucket."
We escaped the trap of "Smart Mode" and switched to "Expert Mode."
We targeted the right keywords with [Exact] and "Phrase" match.
We stopped using "Egocentric" language and wrote solution-oriented ad texts.
Congratulations. Now everything looks perfect. You've launched the campaign. You enter the panel: 50,000 Impressions! 1,000 Clicks! Great numbers, right? But there’s a problem: The phone didn’t ring. The form didn’t get filled. The cash register is empty.
This is the main reason why beginners say "Google doesn't work" after burning through their budget. Because they focused on a wrong metric from start to finish.
"Vanity Metric" (Ego Metric) vs. "Sanity Metric" The Click and Impression you see in the Google Ads panel are both "Ego Metrics." They look good, stroke your ego, and give the feeling of "we reached thousands of people." But they don’t pay the bills.
The "Sanity Metric" we should focus on is: Conversion.
Conversion is the action that is "valuable" to your business:
Seeing a "Thank You" page (Form filled)
Seeing a "Purchase Confirmation" page (Sale made)
Clicking a phone number (Call made)
A click is a cost. A conversion is revenue.
Why Must You "Drive in the Dark"? Let's say you did not set up the "Conversion Tracking Code."
You spent 1,000 TL.
You got 100 clicks (CPC: 10 TL).
Out of those 100 people, 1 called you and became a customer.
Do you know what happens in this scenario?
YOU (Human): You know that you spent 1,000 TL to gain 1 customer.
Google (Algorithm): It knows that you spent 1,000 TL to get 100 clicks.
Google can never know which of those 100 clicks is valuable (the person who called you) and which is trash.
So, what does the algorithm (Smart Bidding) optimize your budget for tomorrow? To get more sales? No. To get more clicks.
Because you didn’t tell it what "success" is. You told Google, "Get me more clicks." It is just doing its job.
What Happens When You Set Up the Conversion Code? (Turning on the Headlights) Now, let’s rewrite the scenario. You set up the "Conversion Code" (Google Tag or GTM) on your site.
You spent 1,000 TL, got 100 clicks.
1 person called you.
Thanks to the code, Google saw that 1 person called.
Now, Google has magical data: "Aha! Out of these 100 people, 99 were empty results, but this 1 person (e.g. between ages 35-44, searching for 'closest plumber') brought a conversion. So, this type of people is valuable."
So, what will Google optimize your remaining balance of 1,000 TL for tomorrow? To find the remaining 99 trash clicks? No. To find others similar to that 1 person who brought a conversion.
Congratulations. You just stopped driving in the dark and turned on your headlights. You opened the algorithm's eyes and gave it a target.
Setting up the "Conversion Tracking Code" may seem technical and complex. GTM, Google Tag, triggers... If you make a mistake, all your optimization will be based on wrong data.
As 212 Medya, this is the first thing we do in the Google Ads process. We measure your conversions with 100% accuracy, focus the algorithm on sales, and do not allow a single cent of your budget to be wasted "blindly."
Advertise on Google
First Set the Target, Then Fire. The "Conversion Tracking" in the Google Ads process is not an option, an add-on, or something that will be dealt with "later."
It is fundamental. It is the steering wheel. It is the compass.
An account without a conversion code, no matter how good your keyword selection is or how great your copywriting is, is doomed to burn its budget.
If you are thinking of advertising, this should be your first step. If your ads are already live, stop right now.
Go to "Tools and Settings" > "Measurement" > "Conversions" tab on your Google Ads panel. There, do you see the actions that are valuable to you (Form Submission, Phone Call, Purchase)? And is the status "Recording Conversions"?
If not, congratulations, you found the answer to "why the phone didn’t ring after getting 100 clicks."
